Melissa Hinkin

Melissa Hinken Portrait

I assert a minimal approach to collected materials, objects from the everyday, such as hooks, polystyrene, copper pipes, mirrors, strip lights and Perspex, act as supports to which I introduce clay, slate or other organic materials. There is a deliberate juxtaposition in my work, raw materials reminiscent of the landscape and the primitive are pitted against industrial man made materials. These simple two part compositions are in a state of tension and flux, yet as the clay slowly begins shrink, the slate gently slumping, the balance begins to shift, creating vulnerable situations and psychological tensions.
